Feminist AI Pre-Conference Workshop

A pre-conference contribution to Solidarity AI by IT for Change

Grounded in the conviction that another AI is possible, this workshop moves past normative critique to unpack and visibilize the politics of choice across the pipeline – especially in Global Majority contexts – where resource and power asymmetries cut across every layer of the technology stack.

Through a mix of case studies, group work, and expert panels, this day-long workshop will unpack the following questions: 
(1) What complex sociotechnical, ethical, and ecological dilemmas (and beyond) do actors in the pipeline face in the pursuit of feminist AI principles? 
(2) How can such constraints be negotiated or confronted in practice, and how can feminist solidarity models support these efforts? 

By surfacing a plurality of perspectives from developers, social enterprises, researchers, and civil society actors on the unique risks, dilemmas, and quandaries that actors in the pipeline encounter, this event will confront these operational dilemmas head-on and co-create practical, feminist solidarity-based pathways for flourishing AI futures. To achieve this, the Center for Global Digital Justice (CGDJ), in collaboration with IT for Change, will convene developers participating in the FemFirst Lab (FFL) initiative (a regional incubator for feminist AI prototypes), researchers and academics participating in the FemFirst Research Observatory (FFRO) (which seeks to advance the critical discourse on Feminist AI approaches), builders from the region working on imagining AI differently, and digital governance advocates. In doing so, we aim to create a safe space for kindred spirits to give voice to shared dilemmas and commit to transformative futures – one decisive step at a time.
