Bio
Sarbani Banerjee Belur is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Arts, Science and Design at IIIT Dharwad, with more than 18 years of experience in applied digital sociology, citizen science, and the social impact of technology. She holds a PhD in Population Studies from the University of Groningen. Her research focuses on frugal AI, digital inclusion, meaningful internet connectivity in rural broadband, and frugal innovation, with particular attention to gender equity and the use of technology to empower marginalized communities.
She has led international initiatives supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Association for Progressive Communications, Meta, and Mozilla. She teaches courses on frugal innovation, the social impact of technology, sociology for innovation, and citizen science. (she/her)
