Charibeth Cheng is Associate Dean and Professor in the College of Computer Studies at De La Salle University in Manila, where she is also a senior researcher at the Center for Language Technologies. A pioneer in natural language processing and machine learning in the Philippines, she co-founded Senti AI and has worked since the early 2000s to improve the digital representation of Philippine languages.
Her research spans multilingual machine translation, sentiment analysis, and language technologies for low-resource languages. In 2024, she received an Imminent Research Grant from Translated for work on multilingual machine translation across Philippine languages, and in 2025 Google supported her research on developing a Filipino tokenizer for NLP. She emphasizes community collaboration and open linguistic resources to strengthen the Philippine AI ecosystem. (she/her)
