Workers of the Internet unite: do online freelancers support platform coops? Interview and survey data suggests worker hostility to gig economy platforms due to their immense power. Workers crave greater collective protection and voice and are thus enthusiastic about platform coops. However, the fragmentation of these workers is a major barrier.
Alex J Wood is a researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, UK. He has previously researched job quality among online freelancers in the gig economy. He is currently researching how the gig economy is transforming labour relations with a particular focus on new forms of solidarity, collective action and organization.
