Slam Laje hosts poetry slams in the Complexo do Alemao favela to promote poetry and works by minoritized writers. Due to the constant violence and marginalization that its residents endure, the favela is a meaningful location for the creation of slam poetry. By occupying various areas of the favela with “passinho,” patterns of rapid foot movements facilitated by sharp twists from the waist, Slam Laje hopes to establish a cultural movement of resistance against the heinous conditions in the favela. Slam Laje won the first poetry battle of Complexo do Alemão, and is a two-time state champion in the Rio de Janeiro slam championship.
