Bio
Sandeep Mertia is an Assistant Professor of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) at Stevens Institute of Technology. He is an ICT engineer-turned-anthropologist of computing, with a focus on India and the Global South. He is the editor of Lives of Data: Essays on Computational Cultures from India (2020) and Putting Data Justice in Context (with Tone Walford and Catarina Morawska, forthcoming). His current research examines the epistemic and linguistic cultures of computing in multilingual LLMs. He earned his Ph.D. in Media, Culture, and Communication from New York University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania (2024-25). Previously, he served as a Research Associate at Sarai-CSDS, New Delhi (2014-17), and was involved in civic technology initiatives such as DataMeet and DataKind.
