Phakin Nimmannorrawong is a PhD candidate in Sociology at St. John’s College, the
University of Cambridge, and an Academic Teacher in Social Science/Social Studies at
Kamnoetvidya Science Academy (KVIS), Thailand.
Funded by the Cambridge-Thai Foundation scholarship in partnership with the
Cambridge Trust, his doctoral research explores the intersection of leftist politics and
blockchain technologies through an empirical case of the “Crypto Leftist” communities.
It examines how the cryptolefts reconfigure the logic of blockchain affordances through
collective identity formation and participatory practices, expressed in the form of a tech
cooperative, blockchain-based applications, and everyday interactions across digital
platforms.
As part of his 2026–2027 ICDE Fellowship, Nimmannorrawong will conduct participant observation
and interviews with core members of Bread Cooperative to examine how leftist politics
and blockchain technologies intersect in practice, analyzing its governance, collaborative
practices, and the challenges of building solidarity-oriented infrastructures within
contested crypto ecosystems.
