Bio
Noopur Raval is an Assistant Professor of Information Studies at UCLA, where she studies the social and political consequences of digital platforms, algorithms, and artificial intelligence, particularly in Majority World contexts. An interdisciplinary scholar trained in information studies, human-computer interaction, science and technology studies, media studies, and postcolonial history, her research examines digital labor, AI futures, Big Tech, and the enduring legacies of colonialism in information and communication technologies.
Her work has included ethnographic research on gig-economy workers in India and research on the global political economy of AI and data work. She previously worked with the AI Now Institute, Microsoft Research, the Wikimedia Foundation, and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. She holds a PhD in Informatics from UC Irvine.
