Bio
John Loewen is a Core Technology and AI faculty member at Chulalongkorn School of Integrated Innovation (SCii) in Bangkok. His doctoral research at the University of Eastern Finland examined how technology can carry Indigenous knowledge and support culturally inclusive education. From that work he developed the I-SLATE and I-DIGEST frameworks for authentic, culturally relevant learning with Indigenous communities. He continues to ask whose knowledge and values shape digital systems. His research now focuses on open-source AI agent development on locally hosted infrastructure as an alternative to dependence on proprietary platforms. His development projects include designing an open-source GIS platform for Indigenous storytelling, a data system for rural economic resilience with UNDP in Myanmar, and building digital capacity through Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) projects in Jordan and Vietnam.
