Bereket A. Tsegay is an Amharic content moderator for TikTok at Teleperformance Kenya and head of union organizing within the company. Trained in the medical field and a former assistant lecturer, he entered content moderation unaware of how exploitative Big Tech practices would push him into labor organizing. Since May 2023, Bereket has been a member of the Kenya Communication Workers Union under the umbrella of UNI Global. He is also a founding member of the Africa Tech Workers Movement, which seeks to transform the conditions of tech workers across the continent. His activism focuses on challenging abusive practices by both AI systems and corporate management.
