Bio

Sandeep Mertia is Assistant Professor of Science, Technology, and Society at the Stevens Institute of Technology. His research examines the history and anthropology of computing, digital infrastructures, entrepreneurship, and data governance, with a particular focus on India and the Global South. He is the editor of Lives of Data: Essays on Computational Cultures from India and is currently researching the languages and epistemic cultures of multilingual AI systems. Previously, he was a joint postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and earned his Ph.D. in Media, Culture, and Communication from New York University. Before entering academia, he worked with civic technology initiatives including DataMeet, DataKind, and Sarai-CSDS. His work bridges science and technology studies, media studies, and critical AI and data governance.
